If you’re in the Los Angeles area, you have probably also spent the last week anxiously following the news and/or helping friends who have been directly affected. The best thing you can do for yourself and your loved ones is to ensure that you are prepared for the next emergency when (not if!) it happens.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s website provides a wealth of resources to ensure that you are prepared in the event of an emergency evacuation or shelter in place order. One of the best things you can do to prepare in advance is to put together an emergency kit or “go bag.” FEMA’s Ready.gov page suggests the following items for an emergency kit:
- Potable Water (1 gallon/person or pet per day for at least 3 days)
- Food for several days, especially non-perishable food that does not require cooking/preparation (with can opener if necessary)
- Battery or hand-crank powered radio
- Flashlight
- First aid kit
- Batteries
- Whistle
- Dust mask (choose N95 or P100 for best filtration)
- Plastic sheeting/tarps, scissors, and duct tape
- Baby wipes, garbage bags, and plastic ties
- Wrench or pliers (to turn off appliances)
- Printed map or road atlas of local area
- Cell phone charger or backup battery
Pallas Care has put together an Amazon list of these and other common emergency supplies for your convenience. Many of these items are those in our own emergency kit(s) or in every day use in our home. You may access the list at this link: https://a.co/2MvszEA
It’s important to keep these supplies close at hand so they are easily accessible in an emergency situation; we recommend storing them together in a backpack or duffel bag. You may want to keep multiple kits in your home and car.
Your local state, county, or city may have suggestions for additional supplies that are relevant to your local weather conditions, as well as evacuation instructions and local emergency shelters. Check with them to see what resources are available in your area.
